Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel Tuesday directed officials to intensify the measures being carried out by the municipal corporation and the State Health Department for treatment, disease control, and prevention in view of the typhoid outbreak in Gandhinagar city.

Patel was speaking at a high-level meeting, attended by top officials of the health department and Gandhinagar district and Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.

“The CM instructed the officials concerned to conduct field inspections of ongoing pipeline works to ensure quality and accuracy, and emphasised on expanding water testing and taking immediate measures to prevent leakages,” an official release said.

Gandhinagar Municipal Commissioner J N Vaghela informed the CM that a gradual decline in cases is being observed, the release said.

He also informed the CM that the GMC has formed 85 survey teams and conducted surveillance of over 1.58 lakh people and repair work of pipeline leakages have been undertaken on a priority basis and super chlorination has been carried out at all water sources.

Adequate quantities of chlorine tablets and ORS packets have been distributed, the officials said.

Sector 24, 26, 28 and Adiwada of Gandhinagar city have been witnessing an outbreak of Typhoid cases since late last month owing to mixing of drinking water with drainage water due to leaks in water pipelines. Over 100 people, majority of them children, affected by the water contamination have been admitted to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital.
