The Islamic State has floated the possibility of obtaining a nuclear weapon from Pakistan within a year through weapons dealers linked to corrupt officials, The Independent has reported, citing an article in the group’s mouthpiece.

The claim was made in the latest issue of ‘Dabiq’ magazine in a piece titled ‘The Perfect Storm’, which has been attributed to IS’s British hostage John Cantlie, the UK daily reported.

The report said the article claims IS has become “the most explosive Islamic movement the modern world has ever seen”, and states: “Let me throw a hypothetical operation… The Islamic State has billions of dollars in the bank, so they call on their wilayah in Pakistan to purchase a nuclear device through weapons dealers with links to corrupt officials in the region.”

The article admits that such a possibility was “far-fetched”, but warns that it’s “the sum of all fears for Western intelligence agencies and it’s infinitely more possible today than it was just one year ago”, the report said.
