A helper associated with a private bus service has been arrested for allegedly stealing $1,600 from the purse of an Iranian national, at Kashmere Gate ISBT, police said. They said that the money was recovered within hours of the complaint being lodged in the case.
The incident came to light on December 15 when a complaint was received at the ISBT police post from Dr Ali Akbar Shah, a professor at Delhi University. In his complaint, Shah stated that his guest, Iranian national Fareshteh Sayanjali, had arrived in India on December 13 and was staying at his residence. She later travelled to Uttarakhand and took a bus to return to Delhi on December 15.
According to the police, while deboarding at ISBT Kashmere Gate around 1.45 pm, the woman inadvertently left her purse inside the bus. Shortly afterwards, she received a call from the bus operator and was informed that the purse had been found. However, when it was handed back to her, she discovered that $1,600, an amount she had kept inside it, was missing, said police.
Based on Shah’s statement, an FIR under Section 305(b) (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Kashmere Gate police station on December 16 and an investigation was initiated.
The driver and the conductor of the bus in which the woman had travelled were questioned. The conductor told police that the purse was found on a seat and was handed over to him by the bus helper, identified as Monish (26).
Police said that though Monish initially attempted to mislead the investigators, he later confessed to stealing the cash from the purse. He was subsequently arrested.
At his instance, the police conducted a raid at his residence in Jahangirpuri on the intervening night of December 15 and 16, and recovered the money, officers said.
Monish had been working as a helper with the bus service for the past year. Further legal proceedings are underway, police said.
