A 26-year-old man, who worked as a rider with bike taxi app Rapido, was killed after he was run over by a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) water tanker in East Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Sunday afternoon, police said.
According to the police, a PCR call was received at Geeta Colony police station around 3:30 pm on Sunday regarding an accident near the SDM office. A team rushed to the spot and found a man under the rear tyre of a loaded water tanker.
The victim was wearing a helmet but his head was completely crushed, police said. No eyewitnesses were found at the spot. The deceased was identified as Jubair Ali, a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, they said.
Police confirmed that the water tanker involved in the accident is an authorised vehicle of the DJB. The driver fled the spot after the incident, they said, adding that the tanker and the deceased’s motorcycle have been seized.
Police said that it appeared that the biker had lost balance and fallen on the road, following which the tanker, coming from the opposite direction, ran over him. Footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area are being scanned to identify the driver, police also said.
After the site was inspected by forensic and other teams, the body was sent to a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
An FIR was being registered, and further investigation was underway, they said.
