A man recently shared how her sister, a college student in Gujarat, was forced out of a rented apartment before she even moved in, simply because she is unmarried. Sharing a Reddit post titled “My sister got kicked out of her apartment for being single,” the man sparked a debate over discrimination against bachelors in India.
He shared that his sister had rented a 3 BHK flat in Gandhinagar with two female friends. They had already paid the broker and moved in their belongings, assured by the broker that renting as unmarried women wouldn’t be an issue. The final rent agreement was to be signed once the other two girls arrived.
But things took a sudden turn when a neighbour raised objections. “The builder put the flat ‘on notice,’ refusing to let them stay even though the landlord was okay with it,” the Reddit user shared.
The student tried to resolve the matter by reaching out directly to the complaining neighbour. However, the attempt ended abruptly. “My sister tried contacting the neighbour uncle to explain that they won’t cause any nuisance. She introduced herself and started talking when the guy just hung up on her. Then he blocked her everywhere,” the post reads.
Frustrated, the brother called the incident discriminatory. “This is not just disappointing, it’s discriminatory. Now all the moving costs are on us, and we have to do it a second time — and also find a new place just before college starts,” he wrote. “Why should young adults — be it students or working — be denied a place to live after everything is finalised just because of outdated societal biases?” he added.

The post resonated with many social media users, some of them who shared similar incidents. “I got kicked out of my apartment in Patna by my landlord who has been living in Mumbai for the last 15 years and never visits,” a user wrote. “Being a bachelor is like being a 2nd class citizen in this nation,” another user commented.
“I had a neighbour in Mumbai who was against us renting a place because we weren’t Gujarati Jains. Even funnier she even mailed the society manager that she only wants Gujarati Jains living in her neighbouring flat. Wait it’s not over, seeing that mail the society manager kicked us out lol- first revoked our mygate access, then refused guests to enter if they were to our place, he even asked us to carry the fridge to the main gate because while we were moving out because we weren’t allowed to have people come to our flat,” a third user shared.
