In a recent incident in Bengaluru, a man named Vijith Kumar was scammed out of Rs 95,000 while trying to get a High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) for his vehicle.

He initially booked his HSRP online through a legitimate website. A week later, he got an email asking him to click a link to update his address. Unaware it was a scam, Kumar followed the link and updated his address.

Soon after clicking on the fake link, Kumar’s worst fears came true. His credit card started showing odd transactions. Within just four days, Rs 95,000 vanished from his account. Knowing he’d been scammed, Kumar reported the fraud at the Bagalur police station, said an Asianet Newsable report.

The police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, scrutinising the email ID and account details tied to the fraudulent transactions.

In July, a Bengaluru woman, 77, lost Rs 1.2 crore to cyber criminals posing as telecom officials and Mumbai crime branch personnel. The fraud was reported when the resident of R T Nagar filed a complaint with North Division CEN police. The incident occurred between June 26 and July 18.

The victim received a call on June 26 from someone claiming to be from the telecom department, alleging a SIM card in her name was being used for illegal activities. Later, two men, pretending to be from the Mumbai crime branch, accused her of involvement in a Rs 60 crore money laundering scheme.
