After Infosys’s N R Narayana Murthy, S N Subrahmanyan, Chairman of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), made headlines for saying he regrets he cannot make his employees work up to 90 hours per week, igniting major backlash on social media users and from prominent figures. Industrialist Anand Mahindra also reacted to the ongoing debate on work-life balance during an event in New Delhi.

Speaking at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025, the business tycoon stressed the importance of the quality of work over its quantity, pointing out that the current debate is heading in the “wrong direction”. He also expressed his belief in the need for leaders within companies who are capable of making thoughtful decisions and sound choices.

“I have huge respect for Narayana Murthy and others. So let me not get this wrong, of course. But I have to say something, I think this debate is in the wrong direction. My point is we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work. So it’s not about 48, 40 hours, it’s not about 70 hours, it’s not about 90 hours,” Mahindra said.

“What output are you doing even if it’s 10 hours? You can change the world in 10 hours,” he said.

Mahindra, who is an avid social media user, was also asked how much he spends on X. Responding to it, he said, “I’m on X on social media not because I’m lonely. My wife is wonderful, I love staring at her. I spend more time. So I’m not here to make friends. I’m here because people don’t understand it is an amazing business tool,” he said.
