Eight people, including two newly elected corporators, suffered minor burns after turmeric powder used in celebrations caught fire near Jejuri temple.
At least eight persons sustained minor burn injuries after bhandara — turmeric powder showered during devotional celebrations — suddenly caught fire during a victory celebration outside the Jejuri temple in Pune district on Sunday afternoon.
Officials from Jejuri police station under Pune Rural jurisdiction said the incident occurred around 3.30 pm, when a group of people were celebrating the victory of two Nationalist Congress Party candidates in the local body elections. The celebrations were taking place near the steps of the famous Khandoba temple in Jejuri town, Purandar taluka.
During rituals at the temple, bhandara — a mixture of turmeric and other items including tamarind seeds — is traditionally scattered over the deity and devotees.
Inspector Deepak Waghchure of Jejuri police station said, “Initial observations suggest when the celebration of the local body election victory of two NCP candidates was being held, some people were showering the bhandara. There were diyas which were lit for the rituals. These diyas had camphor. Primary probe suggests that the turmeric being showered came in contact with the flames of the diya resulting in sudden momentary fire. At least eight persons including two newly elected corporators Swarupa Khomne and Monika Ghadage sustained minor burns. All were taken to a local hospital and have been given preliminary treatment before being released.”
Inspector Waghchure added a probe will be conducted into the sequence of events and the exact composition of the bhandara being used.
