Pakistani pop star Zoheb Hassan, in a Facebook post, paid tribute to Ratan Tata, who died at 86 on Wednesday night. Zoheb shared how Tata played a pivotal role in his and sister Nazia Hassan’s careers and how when launching his music venture, CBS India, Tata reached out to record an album for the new label.

Hassan, in the post, admitted that during his first encounter with Tata, he had no idea who he was.

Zoheb fondly recalled Tata’s approach, sharing how the industrialist personally called their home in Wimbledon. Their mother answered the call, and Tata introduced himself, saying, “My name is Ratan, and I am starting a music company by the name of CBS India. I would like you and Zoheb to record an album for us, if possible.” This conversation led to the creation of Young Tarang, which Zoheb believes may have marked the introduction of music videos in India and South Asia.

In the post, Zoheb also recalled how Doordarshan aired the music videos, helping the album surpass the massive success of Disco Deewane, which catapulted the siblings to stardom.

Zoheb also wrote about the album launch at Mumbai’s Taj Hotel in 1984. “It was only at the launch that we learned about Tata’s background,” he wrote. Following the event, they were invited to Tata’s residence for dinner. Expecting a grand home, they were surprised to find that India’s most influential industrialist lived modestly in a small two-bedroom flat. “It was a simple dinner with a great man, which to this day I will never forget,” wrote Zoheb, describing the warmth of their meeting with Tata, his sister, and his beloved pet.

Responding to the post, one user wrote, “Gosh! This is so precious… And I loved Young Tarang! There’s no sector he hasn’t impacted or at least tried to.” Another user wrote, “What a beautiful tribute for a great man . Thank you for sharing.” A third user commented, “Thank you for sharing this zoheb.. So touching.. We have lost a noble soul.. True ratna.. Return if Possible(RIP) Mr Ratan Tata.”
