What does human flesh taste like? Man cuts piece out of own leg to find out

Brit Lab presenter Greg Foot has a small piece of muscle removed from his leg to find out what humans taste of.

Not many conversations have happened with cannibals to figure out what human flesh, when cooked, tastes like. In fact, it’s downright illegal to consume human flesh. But, then, face it, one is curious. In fact, some say that the human flesh is supposed to be so tasty that once you’ve had a taste the you won’t like anything else.

We don’t know whether that’s true or not, so that’s where Greg Foot, presenter of the Brit Lab, a BBC series, comes in. For one of the series’ episodes, Foot goes on a stomach-churning mission to find out what human flesh — in this case his own — tastes like.

In the episode, Foot visits a lab where four tiny pieces of muscle are taken from his thigh. It’s a bit disconcerting to listen to the conversation that compares Foot’s muscle fibres to that of a chicken.

He then travels to Nottingham, where the samples are cooked, so that its aromas can be analysed.

Taking a whiff of his cooked thigh muscle, Foot exlaims: “That actually smells quite nice. It’s really meaty though, like a lot richer than pork or chicken… it’s like beef and ale stew or something.”
