A Canadian Arts student from Calgary found an ‘easy’ way to avoid high rent in Vancouver. He flies twice a week from Calgary to Vancouver and roughly spends $150 per round-trip flight, which calculates to almost $1200 per month (app Rs 1 lakh).

The video of his interaction with a local news channel, News Vancouver, is doing rounds on the internet. In the video, the student explains that had he been staying in Vancouver, he would have to spend around $2500 per month for the rent. However, his decision to commute from Calgary to Vancouver, in an hour’s flight, twice a week costs him only $150 per round trip. “That’s half the average rent for a one-bedroom in the city,” the student said in the video.

Social media reacts

Soon after the video went viral, social media users jumped to respond to it. While a section of users hailed the student for his decision, others cribbed about the airport process. A user commented, “One hour commute isn’t that bad. But having to show up to the airport so often would suck. Also your schedule would be pretty inflexible, I sure missing a flight would be a big headache.” Another user wrote, “Domestic flights get cancelled out of Calgary all the time due to weather.” An Indian netizen also responded to this, suggesting that this will solve their Mumbai-Bengaluru rent issue. “This is how we can avoid Mumbai-Bengaluru rent racket, just take a flight,” they joked.

“I dont blame him. 2100 for a 1 bedroom. Yeah good luck with that. Spend 100,000 USD over 4 years in rent? Thats half the price of buying your own place,” the third user wrote.
