Amid backlash over a viral video showing BJP’s Patparganj MCD councillor Renu Chaudhary threatening a football coach from Africa for not “knowing Hindi”, the Councillor was summoned by the party’s Delhi unit on Tuesday and asked to explain her conduct, said sources. Following the meeting, Chaudhary issued a public apology even as she shared videos of her supporters defending her actions on social media.

Speaking to The Indian Express, party sources said Chaudhary was asked to appear before Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva at 2 pm after the video drew the attention of the party’s high command.

The clip shows Chaudhary confronting the football coach at Mayur Vihar’s Lovely Park, which falls under the MCD’s jurisdiction. In the clip, Chaudhary is seen warning that action would be taken against the man if he failed to learn Hindi within the next one month. The coach trains underprivileged children at a local park.

Chaudhary had also shared the clip on her Instagram account.

“The councillor’s way of speaking was not correct. Sports is something that connects children and the nation, and it has no language,” Sachdeva said after the meeting, “We conveyed this to her, following which she expressed regret and apologised. Our focus now is on improving facilities at the park.”

Chaudhary herself posted a video apology on Instagram, saying that she did not intend to hurt anyone. “MCD parks are for children to play and receive coaching. We will provide all necessary facilities. I apologise for my behaviour and tone,” she said.

However, even as the party attempted damage control, many of Chaudhary’s supporters posted clips on Instagram defending that those who live in India must learn Hindi — many of these were reposted by the councillor.

Defending her remarks earlier, Chaudhary claimed the coach was conducting commercial activities inside the park without permission and that MCD staff faced communication issues due to the language barrier. She said she had even offered to pay for his Hindi tuition.

A local tea vendor near the park, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the coach had been training children from nearby areas for over 15 years and had stopped coming after the video went viral due to repeated police visits. Locals added that the park, transferred from the DDA to the MCD, lacks basic sports infrastructure.

Party insiders said Chaudhary was issued a “first and last warning”, citing what they described as her habitual offensive conduct. During the meeting, sources said, she alleged that she had received complaints of a drug menace at the park where the incident occurred, though details were not officially disclosed.

Chaudhary, a first-time MCD councillor, was elected in the 2022 MCD polls and was previously associated with the party’s Mahila Morcha. With over 3.6 lakh Instagram followers, she is among the most visible faces on social media from the Delhi BJP. According to publicly available records, she passed Class 10 through the UP State Open School in 2018. At MCD’s monthly House meetings, Chaudhary has repeatedly cited her viral reels, recounting the episodes in detail and accusing the civic body’s ground-level workers of negligence.

Several older clips of Chaudhary have resurfaced following the latest controversy. In one such clip from March 9, she is heard directing officials to act against a tea vendor whose customers were allegedly littering an MCD park. “Main samjha dungi kaan mein tel daal daal ke… yeh MCD ka park hai ya koodadaan hai?…”she says in the clip.

Other clips show her warning contractors over delayed projects and urging meat shop owners to shut during Navratri. In another video dated December 5, she is heard warning the contractor and MCD official over a delayed road project. “10 tareekh tak road nahi bani toh tum saare daloge iske andar — thekedaar samet,” she says, gesturing towards the road that had been dug up.
