Delhi chokes in ‘severe’ air again, govt announces slew of anti-pollution measures

Foul air continued to choke the national capital on Tuesday, with the air quality index (AQI) turning severe, at 412. While Noida was worse at 426, Gurgaon fared better at 326.

The air quality is expected to be in the ‘Very Poor’ category from Wednesday to Friday, according to an IITM forecast.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature settled at 23.2 degree Celsius and minimum at 8.8 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

The Delhi Cabinet, meanwhile, cleared a set of measures aimed at tackling air and water pollution. Announcing the decisions, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the Cabinet approved an allocation of Rs 100 crore to restore water bodies under the Delhi government’s jurisdiction. Out of around 1,000 waterbodies in the city, 160 fall under the government’s jurisdiction.

The Cabinet also approved setting up of Delhi’s first e-waste park at Holambi Kalan, spread over 11.5 acres, to operate on a 100% circular, zero-waste model.

The government further decided to continue the ‘No PUCC, No Fuel’ policy beyond GRAP restrictions. Inspections have found irregularities at 12 PUCC centres, while over 800 polluting industrial units have faced closure or sealing action by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the civic bodies.

Sirsa also announced that four new automated vehicle testing stations will soon be made functional to ensure stricter emissions and fitness testing for commercial vehicles.
