Sam Altman wears a guest ID card at OpenAI office: ‘first and last time I ever wear one of these’

There have been many developments at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, ever since Sam Altman was sacked as its CEO.

The developments at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, have been straight out of a drama series ever since the sacking of its chief executive officer (CEO) Sam Altman.

The poster boy of the generative AI revolution was sacked as the company’s board of directors announced that Altman would step down as CEO, replaced by the company’s CTO Mira Murati on an interim basis.

Since then, the ChatGPT creator has seen two new CEOs, all in the span of a weekend.

OpenAI’s board of directors said Altman would not be returning to his job and Emmett Shear, the former chief executive of Twitch, will replace Murati as interim chief executive of the company.

Amid all this drama unfolding, Altman took to X, formerly Twitter, to post his photo of wearing a guest ID badge while visiting the OpenAI office. “First and last time i ever wear one of these,” he wrote on Monday.

“Those who are offline for a weekend have quite a story to read about Monday morning,” an X user commented. “Yeah how dare they give you a guest badge,” said another. “This story arc is truly incredible,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in a post on X on Monday, said the company has hired OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to lead a “new advanced AI research team”.

On Tuesday, Altman in a post on X said, “Satya and my top priority remains to ensure openai continues to thrive we are committed to fully providing continuity of operations to our partners and customers the openai/microsoft partnership makes this very doable”.

OpenAI was set up in December 2015 as a non-profit AI research organisation whose goal was to develop “artificial general intelligence,” or AGI, which is essentially software that’s as smart as humans.
