Myanmar Earthquake: 7.7-magnitude tremor leaves hundreds dead as buildings collapse; shocking videos capture chaos in Myanmar and Thailand

At least 694 people in Myanmar have been killed and 1,670 injured after an earthquake struck on Friday. Tremors were felt across the region, including in Bangkok.

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and leaving hundreds dead and injured. The tremors, which originated in Mandalay, were powerful enough to be felt in neighbouring Thailand, where buildings swayed, infrastructure crumbled, and panic spread among residents. The disaster has left communities in shock as emergency teams scramble to rescue survivors and assess the full extent of the damage.

In Myanmar, the destruction was immense. The historic Ma Soe Yane monastery—one of the largest in the country—collapsed, along with several government housing buildings in Naypyidaw. Roads cracked open, a dam burst, and a bridge gave way, triggering flooding in lower-lying areas. The famed Ava Bridge, which had stood for over a century, also collapsed.

As soon as news of the quake broke, terrifying videos flooded social media. In one particularly shocking clip from Bangkok’s metro, a train is seen shaking violently, sending passengers into a frenzy as they desperately try to hold onto one another before fleeing the station.

Another video captures a Korean family stranded on the rooftop of a condo as their building trembles, with a child crying out in fear. “This one is on the rooftop of a condo with customers, a Korean family and a young child. At first, I thought I was dizzy,” a viral post described.

The tremors were so powerful in Bangkok that a rooftop swimming pool spilled over, sending torrents of water cascading down the side of a high-rise like a waterfall.

More footage shows the total collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Chatuchak, near Bangkok’s bustling weekend market.

Scottish content creator Travis Leon Price even shared his harrowing escape from the 40th floor of a skyscraper, documenting the chaos as he fled to safety.

The earthquake’s impact wasn’t limited to Myanmar and Thailand. Strong tremors were also felt in China’s southwestern Yunnan province, where local seismologists recorded the quake at 7.9 magnitude. In India, states like Manipur and Meghalaya experienced tremors. According to the India Meteorological Department, the first major shock struck at 11:50 AM, registering at 7.2 magnitude, followed by another powerful tremor of 7.0 at 12:02 PM.

In response to the disaster, several countries have stepped forward to offer assistance. The United States, China, and India are among those pledging support. “India stands ready to offer all possible assistance,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a message of solidarity on X.

Rescue efforts are still underway, and authorities fear the death toll could rise as more rubble is cleared. For now, Myanmar and Thailand remain in a state of emergency, reeling from one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in recent history.
