France celebrates wine festival by replacing fireworks with a drone show

The organisers of the Bordeaux Wine Festival decided to go ahead with a drone show for environmental purposes.

The highly popular annual Bordeaux Wine Festival in France took a futuristic turn this year when the fireworks were replaced with a drone show. The sky over the Garonne River in Bordeaux was lit up with over 400 drones on Friday and Saturday.

The 20-minute programme charmed the onlookers as drones created formations such as wine being poured into glasses, grapevines growing etc. The show concluded with the drones being rearranged to say ‘Bordeaux celebrates wine’ in giant letters in the sky.

This year, the organisers chose a drone show over fireworks in an attempt to take a more environment-friendly approach to the celebrations. The drones were manufactured and managed by the French company Dronisos. Interestingly, the company derives its name from Dionysos, the ancient Greek god of wine.

A video of the drone show is raking in likes on social media. Commenting on the video, a Twitter user wrote, “I’d much rather see something like this than loud obnoxious fireworks. Very creative drone work!”. Another person said, “What’s more impressive than fireworks?”.

In January 2022, the sky over Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi was lit up with vibrant drone formations to celebrate India’s 75th Republic Day. According to ANI, the formations were made possible with 1,000 made-in-India drones. As per the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses website, the drone show was designed and produced by the startup Botlab Dynamics and sponsored by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and the Department of Science & Technology as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
