Icelandic photographer Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove captured a rare and mesmerising sight of lava flowing over a snow-covered landscape in Iceland. The stunning visuals shared on his Instagram showed a fascinating interaction between two forces of nature.

The video left many social media users stunned, as they watched hot lava flow smoothly over the snow without any steam rising, something that is expected in such a situation. This led some to speculating that the footage might have been created using artificial intelligence.
To address these doubts, Nieuwenhove shared another video of a similar scene, saying, “My last reel, which showed lava flowing over snow, got an incredible amount of attention. Many responded with scepticism, even calling it AI-generated. I find this so fascinating because it demonstrates beautifully how us humans can still be surprised by how unique nature is. It shows how we perceive something to be fake because we can’t comprehend it. Isn’t that interesting?”
He pointed out that movies often misrepresent lava, leading people to have unrealistic expectations about how it behaves. “Most people perceive how lava should ‘behave’ incorrectly,” he said. He believes that special effects in films play a big role in shaping these misconceptions. “People are surprised by what it looks like, how it moves, how it sounds, and how it interacts with its surroundings,” he said.
Many Instagram users responded to the video. One user wrote, “THIS… is nature… and it’s miracles.” Another user commented, “I could watch this for hours. Incredible.” A third user said, “Looks like the lake of fire mentioned in the Bible.”
