Popular Social Media Platforms in 2025 List: Even as the number of social media users continues to grow across the world, there has been a rise of 259 million new user identities on various such platforms since this time last year, according to an October 2025 report by DataReportal, which shares digital insights and trends.
Connecting billions of people worldwide, it has emerged as a key pillar of the modern information society, with about 5.66 billion people or 68.7 per cent of the global population, as of October 2025.
Given the growing integration of digital technologies into daily life, there has been a rise in new social media platforms, leading to a user base of billions.
Leading the list, Facebook continues to remain the most popular and widely used social media platform, with over 3.07 billion monthly active users as of early 2025.
While the top-ranked social networks with more than 100 million users originated in the United States, Chinese social networks like WeChat and Douyin also have large active user bases.
California-headquartered Meta Platforms owns four of the largest social media sites, each with more than 1 billion monthly active users: Facebook (core platform), followed by Instagram (3 billion users), WhatsApp (3 billion), and Messenger (942 million) at the second, third, and eighth positions, respectively.
Additionally, TikTok, which originated in China and has ByteDance as its parent company, is fifth on the list with 1.9 billion users.
The app has become a globally popular video-sharing platform, with the popularity of the Chinese social media platform Douyin prompting ByteDance to release an international version, as TikTok.
Reddit, notably witnessing a rise in active monthly users, rounded up the top 10 this year.
