The Google Maps Gemini integration is rolling out, so it may some time to reach your device. (Image Source: Google)Earlier this month, Google announced that it will bring Gemini AI-powered features to Google Maps. Now, the tech giant has started rolling out Gemini for all navigation modes, including driving, walking, using public transport, and riding two-wheelers.
In a post, the company said Google Maps will use the same Gemini language and voice preference that is set for the signed-in account and give you answers based on your precise location preferences. Google also replaced the multi-coloured microphone icon that sits in the top right with the Gemini icon.
And while Gemini replaces the old voice commands, you will have to stick to the “Hey Google” hotword to trigger Gemini in Google Maps. Also, like the Gemini-standalone app, users will be able to use it to get information from connected Google services. Now, you can also ask Google Maps about trip-related information like nearby restaurants, parking spaces, EV charging stations and petrol pumps.
Gemini in Maps can also give you answers to follow-up questions by understanding the context. For example, you can ask Gemini, “Is there a petrol pump along the way?” and proceed with something like “Okay, take me there.” Another nifty addition is that drivers can now use Gemini to report accidents and other obstacles on the road and warn you about potential traffic on your route, even before you start navigation.
Apart from Gemini, Google also added landmark-based navigation and new traffic alerts to Maps. Instead of generic instructions like “Turn left in 100 meters,” Gemini will now say “turn right after the petrol pump.” However, these features are currently limited to the United States and will most likely be available worldwide sometime later.
