ChatGPT-maker OpenAI seems to have introduced a new feature, rather surreptitiously this time. The Sam Altman-led AI powerhouse has shipped the new GPT Mentions feature to ChatGPT. This allows users to integrate custom GPTs or bots into a conversation by simply tagging them much similar to Slack.

At the first-ever developer conference of OpenAI, the makers introduced a feature called Custom GPTs allowing users to create their bots and monetise them on the subsequently launched GPT Store. The store is a space to find useful custom versions of GPT created by various users.

“This will seriously increase the value of custom GPTs in day-to-day use. Friction is down, and usage will go up. It’s also a huge boost to OpenAI’s app store ambitions. It’s a good weekend to start building custom GPTs,” wrote Dan Shipper, CEO of Every, an AI startup. Shipper was among the first to predict that OpenAI was working on the feature.

Ever since this development, there have been many custom GPTs created by users, paving the way for a feature that would allow interactions between users. The feature allows users to use @ to tag other custom GPTs in their prompts. This feature is currently in beta and hasn’t been rolled out to users. Reportedly, the feature will only be available to accounts that have a subscription to ChatGPT Plus.

When rolled out, users can see it in the chat interface of ChatGPT. Users can use multiple GPTS in each interaction with the chatbot. The new feature expands the capabilities of ChatGPT much beyond the chat function. This feature can aid in something like workflow automation and handling complex yet everyday tasks with the help of AI.

GPT-4 will allow custom GPTS and plugins to act in the same prompt, allowing ChatGPT to offer the best features to assist users in their tasks. This feature will be unique to ChatGPT, pushing it ahead of many other chatbots such as Google Bard, Anthropic Claude 2, etc.
