Shubman Gill, on Saturday, won his third Test match as a captain. West Indies on Day 3 could not put up much of a fight against the homeside and were bundled out for 146 runs, handing India a win by an innings and 140 runs. Although he has been making quick strides as Captain Gill, when asked about his learning in his short tenure so far, he said, “So many things, you know.”
“It’s hard to pin down on one or two things that I learnt, but I think over a period of two years, how we bonded as a team, and how we got ourselves out from tough situations and difficult situations, that was really pleasing for me to see, and we are still a learning side, and I think as long as we keep learning from experiences that we have, I think we’re going to be on the positive side of the match,” Gill to the broadcasters after the game.
Gill, was appointed as One-Day International (ODI) captain for the three-match series against Australia, while incumbent Rohit Sharma will be a part of the team as is former India captain Virat Kohli. The Indian Express learns that Gill’s appointment as captain came after the selectors spoke to the Test skipper informing him that, keeping the big picture in mind, they wanted him to captain the side for the ICC World Cup in 2027 to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Gill also attended the selection meeting on Saturday.
Chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, while addressing the media after India’s victory over West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium was asked what the idea was in replacing Rohit as captain. “It’s practically impossible to have three different captains for three formats, just in terms of planning,” Agarkar noted before adding: “Obviously, at some stage, you’ve also got to start looking at when the next World Cup is. It’s (ODI) is also a format which is played the least now. So you don’t get that many games to actually give the next captain to give them that much time to prepare himself or plan.”
