Shakib Al Hasan suspended from bowling in ECB competitions

“Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that the elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15 degree threshold as defined in the Regulations. This suspension takes effect from the receipt of the independent assessment on 10 December 2024, and follows the process set out in the ECB’s Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with a Suspected Illegal Bowling Action,” it added.

Shakib was investigated for his action after his club Surrey’s loss to Somerset in September. This was the only match he played for the county side where he scored 12 runs in the 1st innings and 0 in the second.

According to the ECB, Shakib is ineligible to bowl in ECB competitions until he has passed an independent re-assessment of his bowling action.

This is the latest controversy that Shakib has been embroiled in after the 37-year-old’s Bangladesh career went up in doubt after the fall of the Awami League government, to whom he is still perceived to have links. The allrounder is also implicated in a murder case, and is yet to be given the all-clear from authorities back home to play for his country.

Shakib had announced his retirement from Tests and T20Is — his plan to play a final Test on home soil in the recently concluded series against South Africa was ruined by personal security concerns — but he has said he still wishes to play the Champions Trophy next year for Bangladesh.
