All-rounder Mahmudullah hit 53 on Monday as Bangladesh’s lower order battled gamely but the West Indies secured a first innings lead of 219 on day three of the second Test at Beausejour Stadium.
The tourists, who were 104/7 overnight in reply to the West Indies’ total of 380, were eventually bowled out 20 minutes before lunch for 161. The hosts stretched their lead to 231, going to the break on 12-0 with Kraigg Brathwaite and Leon Johnson both unbeaten on 6.
Earlier, Mahmudullah batted sensibly with the tail as Bangladesh added 57 runs. The 28-year-old, resuming on 13, shared a frustrating eighth wicket stand of 45 with Shafiul Islam.
Mahmudullah became the 11th Bangladeshi to get 1,000 Test runs when he reached 32 but soon lost Shafiul, who edged through to wicket-keeper and captain Denesh Ramdin off the persevering Shannon Gabriel (1/49). Shafiul resisted for 50 deliveries in making 10.
Mahmudullah began to be more expansive, smacking a six over midwicket off Gabriel, and he brought up his half century with his second four. But left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn ended Mahmudullah’s 161-minute vigil soon afterward as the right-hander edged a cut to give Ramdin his fifth catch of the innings. Benn quickly added the scalp of Robiul Islam (0) to finish with 2/19.
Kemar Roach was at his devastating best as Bangladesh were reduced to 104/7 at stumps on Sunday after West Indies were dismissed for 380 in their first innings. In two sustained, controlled spells, the fast bowler tore through the top-order of the tourists’ batting yesterday to finish with 5/33 — his sixth five-wicket innings haul.
Jerome Taylor joined in the rout with two wickets.
The West Indies, whose healthy advantage had been set up by fast bowler Kemar Roach (5/42) on day two, opted not to enforce the follow on, and Brathwaite and Johnson had no alarms in adding to that lead before the break.
Brief scores: West Indies 380 & 12 for no loss. Bangladesh 161 (M Mahmudullah 53; K Roach 5/42).
