India vs Bangladesh Highlights, 1st Test Day 3: BAN – 158/4; bad lights lead to early Stumps on Day 3

Ashwin to Shanto: a fullish delivery and the Bangladesh captain goes low and meets it with a sweep shot that sails over the deep backward square leg fence for six. Fifty for Shanto. And it's come off just 55 deliveries. A mighty fine innings considering the fact that the wickets have kept falling at the other end and yet, he hasn't given up his search for the boundaries every now and then and kept the Indian bowlers on their toes. After 36 overs, Bangladesh are 155/4.

Ashwin tosses one up to Mushfiqur Rahim, who brings out the slogsweep and nails it over the midwicket fence for SIX!

A couple deliveries later, the Bangladesh veteran batter goes for another big shot but KL Rahul at mid on takes a superb forward diving catch. Ashwin gets his third wicket and Bangladesh are in deep trouble now. 147/4 after 34 overs.

Another gorgeous delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin to get rid of Mominul Haque. The southpaw thought he had his stumps covered with a straight batted defence but it was drifted in and straigtened upon pitching to crash into his off stump. India have a third wicket in the session. Ashwin has his second. 

Mushfiqur Rahim is the new batter in, and puts his foot on the pedal straigtaway. An uppish sweep shot which just about misses a diving Mohammed Siraj in the deep for four runs. Bangladesh are 131/3 after 31 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja back into the attack as we move into the last one hour of the day's play. Mominul, who has accumulated just the five runs off his first 16 deliveries takes a chance with a sweep shot off the orthodox spinner and gets the reward for it - a four.  

The surface hasn't opened up just yet for the spinners have the kind of impact India would've expected while calling it a day with the bat earlier today. Jadeja's next over goes for two more boundaries. Shanto brings out the reverse sweep through point before Mominul scythes one wide of Mohammed Siraj at backward point. After 29 overs, Bangladesh are 129/2.

Ashwin continues from the other end. Dishes in a length ball but Shanto dances down the track to convert it into half volley and smash it over the long-on fence for six. That's the second maximum for him this innings. Just the kind of response you need from your captain in a big chase after losing a couple of wickets recently. Bangladesh are 107/2.

A couple of boundaries off Ravichandran Ashwin. First up, an attempted premeditated sweep shot from Mominul Haque off a delivery that spins and bounces hard off the surface. Misses the ball altogether but the ball escapes the keeper as well on its way behind for four byes. 

Then, a quicker delivery down the leg side and Mominul just guides it for four. Akash Deep has replaced Bumrah from the other end and Shanto swivel pulls him through backward square leg for four. 100 comes up for Bangladesh

Shanto on the offensive once again off the first ball in an Ashwin over. Sweeps the offie to the fine leg fence for four. 

Later in the over, Shadman Islam looks to execute a flick shot but closes the face of his bat too early to induce a leading edge that's nabbed by Shubman Gill comfortable in the mid wicket region. Goodness me, that's a soft dismissal. Bangladesh lose both their openers. 86/2 after 22 overs.

Ashwin had been luring Shadman Islam into playing a big shot off a full delivery by tossing it up. The latter does just that to drive one wide of Virat Kohli at short cover for four. 

Then, in the offie's next over, it's Shanto who shimmies down the track to hoick one over long on for six. Second of the innings for Bangladesh. 77/1 after 20 overs.

It had to be him. Jasprit Bumrah is him.

India wanted that first wicket with a good opening partnership building between the Bangladeshi openers. And Bumrah forces Zakir Hasan to commit outside off stump and edge one behind. Yashasvi Jaiswal takes a splendid diving catch to his left in the gully. India have their opening breakthrough.

Ashwin with an absolute peach of a delivery that whiskers past the outside edge of Shadman Islam. Shortens the length, drift into off and then turns it away from the southpaw. Rohit Sharma with both his hands on the back of his head. THAT WAS CLOSE. Almost smelling-the-willow close. Bangladesh, 62/0 after 16 overs. 

Spin from one end, pace from the other. Ashwin tossing the ball up and inviting the openers to take an aggressive route out. Just the three runs come off his first over. Bumrah from the other end keeps it tight as well, only one run comes off his first over since Tea. Bangladesh are 60/0 after 15 overs.

13 overs gone and India haven't struck yet. Bangladesh with just the kind of start they needed chasing 515. Shadman Islam had experienced a torrid first outing in India only yesterday, with Jasprit Bumrah making short work of the left-hander and removing him in the very first over. Today though, he's been able to keep his nerves and start off confidently alongside Zakir Hasan. Off we go again in the last session on Day 3. 

As India eye their first wicket in the last innings of the Chennai Test, here's a good read from our man on the ground for the Test:

Excellent opening wicket partnership from Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan has guided Bangladesh to 56 without losing any wickets at the Tea Break on Day 3 fo the first Test match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. They still need 459 runs to win the Test match. The Bangladesh openers have managed their first 50+ opening stand versus India in India and have kept Indian bowlers at bay, scoring 56 runs in 13 overs. Shadman is on 21 off 40, while Zakir has shown a positive approach and is batting on 32 off 38. We will be back after a short break

Shadman Islam is struggling here and calls for the physio. He is down. The physio is stretching his right leg. He is back on his feet and ready to continue.

Only the third 50+ opening partnership in 28 innings for Bangladesh against India in Tests, two of those coming in the fourth innings & both involving Zakir Hasan.

A solid 50-run stand for the first wicket by Bangladesh. Zakir steps down and hits Ashwin over long-on to hit his fifth boundary. 

Seven runs came from Akash Deep's over. The Bangladeshi openers have done everything right so far. They have put 46 runs in nine overs. 

Ashwin strikes almost straightaway. Jaiswal did well to get the boot on that. Just a single from that Ashwin's over. 

After bowling four excellent deliveries, Aaksh Deep bowled it wide and short and Shadman latches onto it and puts it away for a boundary. Five runs came from Akash Deep's first over. 

Through the covers this time. Two flowing drives and one six, 14 runs came from Siraj's over. Bangladesh need 482 runs to win the Test match. 

Now he growing in confidence. A lovely on drive, nicely punched down the ground to collect another boundary. 

Lovely pick-up shot from Zakir. It was back of a length delivery on the body and Zakir quickly picked the length and hit it nonchalantly over the square leg fence for a maximum. 

Steady and cautious start for Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam. At the end of five overs, Bangladesh are 19 without losing any wickets. Bangladesh need 496 runs to win the match.

Lovely shot from Shadman Islam. First runs for Bangladesh after back-to-back maiden overs. Seven runs came from Siraj's second over. Bangladesh need 500 runs to win.

A couple of boundaries to settle the nerve. Zakir didn't time it that well but the connection was enough to get second of the over. Eight runs came from that Bumrah over. Bangladesh need 507 runs to win.

Zakir and Bangladesh are away with a boundary. Zakir opens his bat face to guide it in the gap between backward point and gully. Bangladesh need 511 runs to win.

We are back for the fourth and final innings of the series opener. The umpires and players are out in the middle. Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan to open for Bangladesh. Jasprit Bumrah to handle the new ball for India. He will start from round the wicket, with three slips and a gully in the cordon. Here we go...

Rohit Sharma calls his players as India have declared their innings on 287/4, setting a massive target of 515 for Bangladesh. The Bangladesh's openers rush off the field and out come the Indian pacers to warm-up. Shubman Gill walks off to a standing ovation after a magnificent century. A huge cheer when Jasprit Bumrah enters the ground. 

KL Rahul has looked so good in his stay during this inning. Sloppy from Taskin but KL and India won't mind. Guess what, no declaration from Rohit. India lead by 506 runs.

India's lead has now gone past 500 runs. I think this might be the last over before India declares. 

Beautiful from KL Rahul. Flighted delivery outside the off stump. Rahul dances down the pitch and gets closer to the pitch of the ball, driving it through extra cover for another lovely boundary. India lead by 496 runs. 

Shubman Gill becomes the first batter to register a second innings century against Bangladesh after getting dismissed for a duck in the first.

Tossed up and Shubman Gill cuts it left to the point fielder to collect another boundary. India lead by 490 runs. 

Shubman Gill completes his fifth Test century. He reached the feat in 161 balls, and smashed nine fours and three sixes. Kl Rahul then ended the over with a boundary. India lead by 483 runs

First boundary of the innings for KL Rahul. An authoritative shot by KL. Eight runs came from Mominul Haque's first over. Shubman Gill moves into 99. India lead by 477 runs. 

Back-to-back boundaries for Shubman Gill. He moves to 96 now. Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin are in their whites. So, the declaration might just be around the corner.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz takes a sharp return catch to dismiss Rishabh Pant. Mehidy Hasan Miraz has finally broken this massive partnership! He gets rid of the centurion! An excellent knock from the wicketkeeper batter, and he gets a standing ovation! He thanks the heavens as he heads back to the pavilion. India lead by 461 runs

Test century No 6 for Rishbah Pant. What a return this has been for him to Test cricket. Gets a standing ovation from everyone present in the stadium. Dinesh Karthik on air says, "Test cricket has missed him".

Cuts it wide of the cover and then takes a single. He now moves to 99. India lead by 450 runs. 

Pant tonks Shakib straightaway for a six. He has followed it with a boundary. The partnership has crossed 150 now. India lead by 445 runs. 

Two singles from Mehidy's first over after the break. India lead by 434 runs. 

Welcome back for the play on the second Session of Day 3! The umpires and players have taken their positions. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will resume their respective innings. Who will get to the century first, and here is Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who will start the proceedings for Bangladesh. Here we go... 

Shubman Gill (86 not out) and Rishabh Pant (82 not out) are involved in an unbeaten 138-run stand for the fourth wicket. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant teed off and started finding regular boundaries. To make matters worse for Bangladesh, their skipper dropped Pant on 72 off Shakib Al Hasan. Bangladesh bowled well in the first hour but failed to contain runs after the drinks break. India have extended their lead to 432 runs. We will be back after the lunch break. Stay tuned! 

Back-to-back boundaries for Rishabh. He swept the first one and he stepped out to hit it over the mid-off. This might be the last over before the lunch break. India lead by 431 runs. 

At the end of 50 overs, India are 195 for 3 and the lead is 422 runs. 

Captain Najmul Shanto drops a sitter. Pant goes for a slog sweep but gets a top edge in the on side. Shanto at mid wicket moves to his right, settles under this high ball but spills it. India lead by 420 runs.

Lovely timing. Shakib tosses this up and Gill steps out of the crease, takes full advantage and drives it off the middle of the bat wide of long off. These two have shifted gears. India lead by 419 runs.

Down on one knee and Rishabh Pant hits Hasan Mahmud for a six over fine leg. Expensive over that from Hasan.  India lead by 411 runs.

Delightful this from Pant. India's lead has now gone past 400 runs after this boundary. Clear signs that both these players are looking to shift gears. India lead by 404 runs.

Shakib Al Hasan is into the attack for the first time on Day 3. Most of the fielders are out in the boundary and Pant welcomes Shakib with a reverse sweep, that went for a boundary. The shot also brings a 100-run stand between Pant and Gill. India lead by 398 runs.

Shubman Gill again. He hits his third six of the innings, all against Mehidy Hasan. It was not a massive one, but managed to just clear the ropes at long-on. India lead by 393 runs 

Some shot from Pant. Tossed it up by Mehidy, and Pant comes down the track gives himself room and goes inside out over covers for a boundary.  India lead by 387 runs.

Hasan Mahmud bends his back and bangs it short, it doesn't rise much to trouble Gill who waits back and controls the pull through forward square leg for a boundary. India lead by 382 runs.

Rishabh Pant reaches to half-century in 88 balls. A welcome return for Rishabh in the Test cricket. Fifties in consecutive Test matches and both against Bangladesh. India lead by 378 runs.

Another good over from Nahid Rana. He kept it tidy and is bowling with a good pace. Pant is one run away from his fifty.  India lead by 376 runs.

Short and wide from Nahid and Shubman cuts it past point boundary for a four. He is growing in confidence. Umpires are having a look at the ball and they are happy with it. India lead by 372 runs.

Here is a trademark one-handed six by Rishbah Pant. Pant comes down the pitch but he is not to the pitch of it. Still, he goes after it, trying to swing too hard downtown. Loses control off his bottom hand but has plenty of power to clear Shakib Al Hasan at the wide long off fence. Eight runs came from that over. India lead by 366 runs.

Four runs came from Nahid Rana's first over. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are looking solid. It will be interesting to see when these two batters will decide to cut loose. India lead by 360 runs.
