England all-rounder Ben Stokes has undergone knee surgery, while fellow international Reece Topley has been ruled out for three months with a partial stress fracture.

Stokes expects to miss the rest of Sri Lanka’s tour of England due to the cartilage tear in his left knee but he could return for the Pakistan series in July.

Stokes jarred his knee on the second day of the first test at Headingley last week and, after trying to play through the pain, wasn’t able to bowl in Sri Lanka’s second innings. England won by an innings and 88 runs inside three days.

The England and Wales Cricket Board says Topley is likely to be sidelined for most of the season due to a partial stress fracture of the lumbar spine.
