26/11 plotter Makki, brother-in-law of Hafiz Saeed, dies in Lahore
Makki, the brother-in-law of JuD chief Hafiz Saeed, was handed down six months imprisonment in terror financing in 2020 by an anti terrorism court.

ABDUL RAHMAN Makki, brother-in-law of 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and deputy chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba front Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), died of a heart attack in Lahore Friday.
Sources said Indian intelligence agencies too have received this information. Makki was wanted by India for his role in the Mumbai terror attack as one of the plotters.
The news agency PTI reporting from Lahore quoted the JuD as saying that Makki, a diabetic, had been ill for the past few days and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital. “Makki suffered a cardiac arrest early this morning and he breathed his last in the hospital,” a JuD member told PTI.
Makki was handed six months imprisonment in a terror-financing case in 2020 by an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan. He had been keeping a low profile after the sentence.
In 2023, Makki was designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations, subjecting him to assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
In 2020, India had designated Makki, who headed the political affairs and foreign relations departments of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
In a gazette notification, the Centre had said that Makki was designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order, dated November 4, 2010 by the US Department of Treasury. “Makki is involved in raising funds for LeT… also supervised the Improvised Explosive Device explosion that took place on May 7, 2006 inside Odeon theatre, RTC Cross Road in Hyderabad, causing injuries to four persons,” it said.
According to the UN, Makki was also a member of the JuD’s Shura (governing body) and held positions in its Markazi (central team) and Daawati (proselytization) team. “He was actively involved in raising funds, recruiting and radicalising youth, and planning attacks in India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir,” an official said.
In 2010, NIA had filed a chargesheet in connection with a plot to execute terror attacks in Hyderabad, which also mentioned Makki’s name.
