Opinion Gotta practise some moves
You watch Jhalak... for Malaika Arora. Yes or no? Be honest,it's yes.
Why do reality shows based on dance work so well on television? Think Nach Balliye,So You Think You Can Dance, and of course Jhalak Dikhla Jaa (Sony). It’s not the competition, that’s for sure. It’s the body. The bodies of men and women contorting themselves in ways that give you a stitch in the side just watching them but warm you to the bone.
You watch Jhalak… for Malaika Arora. Yes or no? Be honest,it’s yes. Her clothes cling to her in such a way that they display all the right parts and hide just enough. So when she dances,as she did in Monday night’s episode with Krishna,it was like sitting in front of a log fire — hot, hot, hot. It’s a visual delight, unlike reality shows like Indian Idol or Sa Re Ga Ma Pa which are only on song.
Here’s the other thing: in a medium that is so,so conventional, where the only six pack you see is Khali’s (and he probably carries a dozen, effortlessly!),the dance shows are provocative, naughty. You can dance item numbers like ‘ Munni badnan hui ‘ as daringly as you like, display that midriff like the map of the world, and get high marks for it. Nobody is going to naysay you,or threaten to banish you to past 11 pm (where Rakhi Sawant now languishes with Rakhi Ka Insaaf ). (By the way she was dancing to ‘ Munni ‘ the other night,I think on Zee’s Rishtey Awards, and b’gosh, you wanted to close your eyes, forget about the kids’!
On dance shows, almost anything goes. Did you see, boxer Akhil Kumar pick up his partner and reveal everything about her as he deployed her like a machine gun? It was a beautiful move and one that Malaika wanted to replicate (later!) but wow…
Not everything on the show is voyeuristic. If you watched the first few episodes of Jhalak …,you’d know that the reason to watch a rather plump Renuka Shahane is not for every move she makes because she makes few of them and that too slow enough to be not moving at all. You watch her for that 1,000-watt smile; last seen,it was a serious rival to Madhuri Dikshit’s dental display, which as you know,is frequently on display in the show — she is one of its judges.
Finally, let’s not forget that we watch the contest for some good dancing. Sushant, the male lead of the Zee soap Pavitra Rishta moves as fluid as water — and then some. A pleasure.
Gotta go and practise some moves myself now!
