• If the Americans exit Afghanistan defeated,or with a partial victory,India will indeed have to deal with two debris states.

The roadmap defined in Washington needs to be modified to match local requirements. It’ll be cheaper in the long run if Western allies help Afghanistan evolve its own governance, utilising local tribal chiefs. Irrespective of whether the Americans stay in Afghanistan or not,we’ll have to help Afghans achieve what they want without exhibiting our pre-eminence. It is in our interest to move forward in the peace process with Pakistan with or without the American presence in the region.

• Should the pressure exerted by K.C. Rao through his fast-unto-death result in the creation of a separate Telangana state,it would set a bad precedent. The Centre’s positive statement has already caused widespread political turmoil in Andhra Pradesh. Similar agitations can be seen over Vidarbha,Gorkhaland,Bundelkhand,Harit Pradesh, etc. Thus the need of the hour is to look at the larger picture: why different groups are raising demands for new states.

No doubt, smaller states can be better administered but currently lack of resources and extremist menace can create other problems as seen in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Then,a number of other small states may invite apprehensions about maintaining the country’s integrity. It is therefore imperative at this juncture to ensure inclusive economic growth within all states, with special emphasis on backward regions.

• The Centre’s decision to carve out a separate state from Andhra Pradesh is disheartening. K.C. Rao’s good intentions for Telangana are appreciated but there is the fear that this might aggravate the situation in other regions with similar problems. A peaceful solution should have been presented, accounting for integrity and equality.

• The TRS chief’s choice of fasting for a separate Telangana state could be a hazard to the whole nation. A fast-unto-death and the attention it attracts is not a justifiable way of attaining an objective.

The prime minister should act in an unprejudiced manner. If everybody sails on the same boat,India could be afflicted with the disease of partition.

• This refers to ‘In RS,Congress sharpens attack on Vajpayee’. The person responsible for not preventing the demolition of the Babri Masjid was Kalyan Singh,as he was then the CM who broke his promise. As for Vajpayee,he was distressed by the demolition of Babri although he did support the construction of the temple.
