• If the Americans exit Afghanistan defeated,or with a partial victory,India will indeed have to deal with two debris states. The roadmap defined in Washington needs to be modified to match local requirements. It’ll be cheaper in the long run if Western allies help Afghanistan evolve its own governance, utilising local tribal chiefs. Irrespective of whether the Americans stay in Afghanistan or not,we’ll have to help Afghans achieve what they want without exhibiting our pre-eminence. It is in our interest to move forward in the peace process with Pakistan with or without the American presence in the region.

In sympathy

• The US has finally realised the strategic importance of fixing Pakistan and of bringing stability to South Asia. The present situation in Pakistan is not at all pleasing. Key strategic structures are being targeted by terrorists repeatedly — civilian casualties are mounting. There is no doubt that those who have created or facilitated these terrorists have to be held accountable, but that should not make us forego our sympathy towards innocent Pakistanis.

• This refers to ‘To save the Himalayan glaciers,YouTube queen sings in Paradise’. It’s a matter of grave concern that the highest glacier of the world may disappear due to global warming. Terra Naomi’s efforts on making climate change an issue are praiseworthy. It is worrying that this glacier will disappear by 2030 given rising temperatures and melting glaciers.

Good show

• The Indian cricket team led by M.S. Dhoni deserves credit for reaching the summit in the ICC Test rankings. In the past, while the killer instinct was provided by Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly inculcated the fighting spirit,Mahi was able to mobilise the resources effectively to take the Indian team to the pinnacle. Though Dhoni wanted to rely on youngsters,it’s the seniors who contributed significantly to the present glory. The youngsters both in their batting and bowling have not lived up to expectations.

• The splendid Indian victory in the India-Sri Lanka series has placed India at the top of Test cricket. Naturally,it has been a team effort but credit goes to captain Dhoni and the brilliant knock by Virendra Sehwag who he played as if it were a one-day match. This spirit must continue in all forthcoming cricket matches. To sustain victories, confidence must be maintained. Concentration on balling and bating wins matches.
