With due humility

With admirable brevity, your paper conveys the verdict of the assembly elections (‘Anti Congress’,IE,March 7). But why is the verdict anti-Congress? The answer is in Shekhar Gupta’s ‘They just didn’t get it’ (IE,March 7). One regrets to say that our politicians,as a whole, are incapable of practising “humility”.

Shekhar Gupta hit the nail on the head when he said that humility and not hubris wins it (‘They just didn’t get it’,IE,March 7). Humility tells us to be happy when our basic needs are met. Hubris is when we want the rest to follow us. The UP results show what farcical political agendas can do to parties. People are reeling under the economic downturn. Parties which write their manifestos around humankind’s needs will prevail.

Grassroots

It’s time the Congress realised it can no more win voters’ hearts by simply announcing largesses from Delhi (‘National Pradesh’,IE,March 7). The ground level delivery mechanism remains corrupt and unreformed. Hence, benefits don’t reach people. Second, the party’s grassroots organisation, which could have kept a tab on the delivery mechanism,is neglected. Too much is sought to be controlled centrally. That’s probably why ordinary Indians have started looking to regional parties that have a strong network of workers. That also explains the resounding success of the Samajwadi Party in UP and of the BJP in Goa. Even the Shiv Sena’s reasonable success in the recent BMC elections, despite its none too impressive record in civic management, can be attributed to its superior organisation. The lesson for the BJP is again on the organisational front. It needs to revitalise its organisation and redefine its identity.

Luck now

This refers to ‘Sonrise in Lucknow: No goondagardi…(father) will be CM,says Akhilesh’ (IE,March 7). It’s game, set and match for the SP,which has created history in UP with a landslide, and is now in a position to call shots in national politics. Akhilesh Yadav, the man of the moment,is level-headed,apart from being gracious, with his feet firmly on the ground.

Govern well

The people of India are no longer in awe of the scions of this or that family, including the two who led their parties to victories. Nor is it a rejection of those who lost. Though the saying “nothing succeeds like success” is a universal truth, the fact remains that the people of these states expect their new representatives to appreciate the fact that the vote was for good governance.
