Terror watch
* This refers to the editorial,A grim duty (IE,February 23). It is right to suggest that we cannot put off the National Counter Terrorism Centre any longer, especially with terror attacks recurring in Indian cities. Indias fragile internal security is a concern and in need of a comprehensive review. It needs better coordination between Central and state governments when it comes to sharing intelligence and security inputs. Setting up the long-pending NCTC could streamline counter-terrorism operations in India.

Great Indian railways
* APROPOS Stories from the train (IE,February 25) by Marian Aguiar, former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi rightly said that the railways are a symbol of Indian unity. They connect the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Perhaps no other mode of transport, whether buses or airlines, has such reach. Buses, moreover, are usually the preserve of a particular state. Railways cut across the country. The people travelling with you in the compartment belong to different religions, speak different languages and come from different places. But often, the conversations you have with them are about matters of national interest, not just specific regional or cultural issues.

A cut above
* THIS being possibly the last budget of the UPA government before the next general election, politics is likely to prevail over economics (Expect in Budget: Fiscal deficit likely to fall on spending cuts,IE,February 25). I,for one, fail to understand why economic experts never question the tax-exemption for agricultural income. After Independence, when the country had inadequate agricultural production and imported foodgrains, agricultural subsidies and tax exemptions were necessary to encourage farming. Now,when the country has an agricultural surplus, subsidised water, electricity, seeds, fertilisers and a minimum support price seem to be unnecessary. If all others are required to pay a tax on an income above a certain range, why cant farmers be taxed in the same way?

Double whammy
* KUDOS to Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his heroic 224 runs at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai (Ind vs Aus: Australia limp to day 5,India need 1 more,IE,February 25). His double century has silenced critics and restored the faith of Indian cricket fans. As he took the crease on Sunday,Dhoni looked confident. His innings prove that he is one of Indias best batsmen in all three formats of cricket, and his captaincy is good for the team. With his fantastic score,Dhoni has changed the course of the game and given India an edge in the series. Indian cricket fans will watch expectantly to see if India can continue on this winning streak.
