The editorial ‘Mamata should go’ (IE,July 20) rightly said: “The railway minister is least interested in her charge. Set her free”. Mamata Banerjee is not devoting her time to the railway ministry at all. She keeps herself totally preoccupied with West Bengal affairs to root out the Left. This is an injustice to her duties. She is certainly handling this important portfolio casually and is not serious. Two major train accidents in just two months have taken place. She visits the sites, announces compensations, and thinks she’s done her duty. The fact that Banerjee spends so much time in Kolkata instead of New Delhi speaks volumes on her carelessness. The Railways have more than enough money which should be utilised for the safety and comfort of commuters. Life is more important than anything else. It is shameful that despite the availability of anti-collision devices, the same have not been put to use anywhere except in the Konkan and the Northeastern Railways. It is more shameful to learn that ACDs are still in the process of modification despite having been developed years ago.

Mamata Banerjee should voluntarily quit the ministry and devote herself fully to Bengal’s politics. Sailing on two boats will only result in a drowning.

The UPA will have to take the decision of shifting the Railways portfolio from her to a suitable and capable person bypassing “coalition compulsions” in the interest of the nation.

It’s not a single accident the Indian Railways have met with in the recent past, but a spate of accidents since Mamata Banerjee took over. This has proved beyond doubt that she is least interested in her charge. These accidents have taken hundreds of innocent lives. Gone are the days when a Lal Bahadur Shastri, owning moral responsibility for a railway accident, would resign as railway minister. Since she doesn’t even own moral responsibility and will not offer to quit,to save the Railways and human lives, she needs to be removed without delay.

The riot act

Dhiraj Nayyar’s ‘Point of departure’ (IE,July 21) suggests that the riot act should be read to Mamata Banerjee. I wonder if it’ll help or is even appropriate.

It’s clear that she is more Kolkata-fixated than Railways-focused. If the PM still allows her to keep the ministerial berth,is she to be blamed or is he? Whether or not she should be shown the door should be discussed at the cabinet level but not at the level of the public. At the public level, the only person responsible for keeping her in the seat is the PM.
