* This refers to ‘A touch of Americana’ by Shailaja Bajpai (IE,October 24). I must thank and congratulate Star Premier HD. Sitcom fans all over the country will be relieved that they can now watch the latest seasons of their favourite foreign TV shows as they are aired in the US. They will no longer need to stream or download these shows to be up-to-date. When I was in college,Desperate Housewives was aired several seasons late in India. Bajpai’s account also reflects the diversity of entertainment that US TV shows offer, compared to our own desi ones. Foreign shows seem to constantly explore new and untouched themes. In contrast,a majority of Indian TV shows still revolve around some sort of joint family,saas-bahu saga. Even shows like Bigg Boss, which follow the same format as similar foreign shows, are losing ground because of their lack of inventiveness.

Expensive treatment

* This refers to ‘Costly mistakes’ (IE,October 25). The Supreme Court judgment that awarded Rs 5.96 crore with interest to Kunal Saha in a case of medical negligence is shocking. How much is too much? Under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 there is no cap on the amount of compensation that can be claimed or awarded. In India, where we need more doctors to treat the poor, this development will force doctors and hospitals to raise treatment costs so that they are able to cover such compensation claims. A sword hanging over a doctor’s head will not ensure steady hands.

Changing times

* This refers to ‘Communal forces killed grandmother,my father. Will probably kill me too’ (IE,October 24). One cannot really blame Rahul Gandhi for focusing on personal and emotional issues rather than on development or governance issues. The Congress seems bereft of novel ideas and incapable of delineating its policy on matters that affect the day-to-day life of an ordinary person. Rahul Gandhi’s speeches are low on substance. He seems to be resorting to the same old Congress tactic of invoking the Gandhi name and drawing attention to the family’s history. He is out of sync if he believes that voters can still be swayed by emotional pleas. Times have changed and people have moved on. Young Indian voters are looking for something else.

Despite scams

* This refers to ‘I am not above law, nothing to hide: PM’ (IE,October 25). The prime minister’s statement has come a little too late and seems to be an afterthought. Had Manmohan Singh publicly offered to appear before the CBI when the coal scam first erupted,so that he could be questioned about the coal block allocations that took place during his tenure as coal minister, his stature and prestige would have soared. His assertion that the Congress will win the 2014 general elections despite “scams” seems to be borne out of bravado rather than from the ground realities.
