This refers to the editorial Nourishing change (IE,February 20). The Union governments proposal for an NBS regime on fertilisers is the right step. No doubt political interests didnt let successive governments take any concrete initiative to cope with fertiliser subsidy. Finding a solution of this long-pending issue had become a priority for the government. Since this bulky subsidy hasnt helped increase the foodgrain production, theres an urgent need to rationalise both fertiliser subsidy and its use. In view of soaring foodgrain prices and food insecurity, this proposal, linking subsidy with demand in market, will prove a milestone towards reforms in agriculture. But taking a final decision will be skating on thin ice. The government must estimate the impact of removal or rationalisation of fertiliser subsidy on foodgrain production and their prices.

Meghnad Desais Mayawati-Rahul revolution (IE,February 21) hit the nail on the head in observing that Dalits are the same as all other Indians, aspirants to their overall amelioration without let or hindrance and, hence, any party cold-shouldering or taking them for granted will be destined to face the music in form of corrosion in its vote-bank. But the fact that the BSP has already been responsibly safeguarding Dalit interests has been fully vindicated in its sweeping victory in the recent UP council polls. Further,Desais idea of building a multi-faith complex on the single site and celebrating an inclusive India holds water and merits appreciation for being conducive to national integrity.

No desi Hamams
This refers to For an Indian military-industrial complex by Manish Tewari (IE,February 19). The indigenous production of defence equipment can only be successful if theres a change in the work culture of PSUs and a change in attitude of the top brass of the three services. This was neatly summed up by M. Natarajan,DRDO chief, while speaking at Aero India Show in Bangalore. He said that the political class does not understand the way things work. HAL and such other manufacturers cannot get production lines started, while the armed forces prefer a perfumed soap from Paris to a desi Hamam.

Déjà vu
Congratulations are due to the Indian cricket team for winning the Jaipur cliff-hanger. The climax came when the last pair of the Proteas made a desperate but unsuccessful attempt to score the crucial run to tie the match. It reminded me of an identical situation during the 1992 World Cup encounter between India and Australia. In that nail-biting finish, our 10th wicket duo made a heroic dash for the victorious run,but failed. Had they succeeded,Pakistan, the ultimate champions, would have been knocked out during the league stage itself.
