Right analysis
Shekhar Guptas The Arresting Moment (IE,July 23) is one of the best analyses of the significance of Ghulam Nabi Fais arrest by the FBI. It is indeed an important turning point in US policy towards Pakistan-sponsored terror. It exposes the dubious role of our intellectuals and journalists, who were shamefully enjoying the hospitality of the ISI by default, through Fai. They cannot hide behind the veil of ignorance about Fai.

Vastanvis exit
The removal of Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi from the post of vice chancellor is unfortunate (After Vastanvi,IE,July 26). He became controversial after praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for inclusive development and asking Muslims to move forward from the Gujarat riots. He subsequently clarified that he never gave a clean chit to Modi on the riots. But by removing him,the Majlis-e-Shoora has shown its narrow mindedness and disrespect for an individuals right to freedom of expression. The governing body has done more harm to Darul Uloom than to Vastanvi, who happened to be its first VC with a professional degree,an open mind and a progressive vision who might have proved an asset for the institution.

Poor show
Indias inept batting, poor bowling and ordinary fielding all helped England to win the Lords Test (Test No 1 goes down,IE,July 26). It was a pathetic show by India in the 2000th Test and their 100th against England. M.S. Dhoni won the toss and gave the match on a platter to England. How long can we play with half-fit players and still say we are the No 1 side? But for the lack of lbw referrals, the match would have been over by lunch on the fifth day. We always depend on toss, pitch and umpiring to win matches. This time round, everything went against the team. We need to have a new-look side to play the likes of Australia.

Potholed
The first showers of monsoon bring out the croaking of frogs. In Mumbai, frogs may not herald the onset of the rains, but rampant potholes and craters on the roads are an annual occurrence. This gives an opportunity to politicians to start their annual chorus about the ordeals of the common man. Its a feeling of déjà vu. Blaming other agencies,BMC,MMRDA,PWD,etc, the corruption of contractors, use of wrong technology, are some of the excuses put forward. We all know that the omnipresent potholes will not disappear. The Mumbaikar shows his famed spirit and resilience not only after a terrorist attack, but day in and day out.
