Pratap Bhanu Mehta has made a distinct analysis of the price situation in ‘Albert Pinto’s missing anger’ (IE,April 14). His concern on the diffused debate on inflation is not unfounded. While some inflation is a natural phenomenon in a developing economy, the prevalent near double-digit inflation is unwarranted and should ring alarm bells for policy-makers. The recent price hike clearly owes to political goof ups in the name of deficient supply. As regards erstwhile popular political protests, they have become more symbolic than action oriented. In fact, some of the political parties have launched only token protests against rising inflation in a bid to remain in the limelight. It’s unfortunate that such a vital issue concerning us all has been relegated to an insignificant level.

Anything to hide?

Apropos the editorial ‘Dignity in retreat’ (IE,April 14),the conduct of any public figure is expected to be exemplary. IPL is cricketainment and taxes are being paid to government. Therefore, the IPL is definitely in the public domain and should always stand to public scrutiny. No objection can be raised about ownership, which should be declared openly. It should be compulsory to divulge details, including owners, financiers, bankers, administrators. The

accounts should also be audited to ascertain the source

of finances and expenditures.

US President Barack Obama should be congratulated for his meaningful initiative at the nuclear summit in Washington DC,which highlighted the renewed commitment of global leaders to safeguard peace and protect global integrity by standing together in refraining from the use and misuse of nuclear weapons. The cautionary note at the summit for endeavouring to check and guard nuclear weapons and nuclear technology from falling in the hands of terrorist outfits is alarming that asks for a globally acceptable nuclear policy with strong consensus. However, security interests of member nations should be respected in building the consensus. The Indian position at the summit is praiseworthy — the global call for working together in nuclear disarmament, emphasising the need for zero tolerance and creation of a global nuclear energy centre to help and support in exploring nuclear energy in the interest of human welfare. It is a reformative thought for the progress of peace and cooperation.

White elephant

This refers to the editorial ‘On the House’ (IE,April 14). The Tamil Nadu assembly’s resolution to revive the legislative council is not well thought-out. State legislative councils cannot be compared with the Rajya Sabha because the latter has played a very constructive role. Legislative councils have only proved to be white elephants for state exchequers. They have only delayed the legislative process in states where they exist.
