The installation of the statue of tribal freedom fighter Tatya Mama Bhil, revered as Madhya Pradesh’s own Robin Hood, in Khargone on Tribal Pride Day has become a source of embarrassment for the administration after a fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) structure came up instead of a marble or metal one as originally planned.

Municipal records and interviews with senior officials show that the Khargone municipal corporation rushed to meet the politically significant November 15 deadline, leaving just 22 days from the sanctioning of funds to finish the statue. Moreover, the work was handed to a contractor, who officials said had no prior experience of such projects. Authorities also accepted a late-night delivery that left no scope for inspection, resulting in the installation of a statue that violated explicit conditions laid down by the district administration.
