Power play
It is true that power tariffs in Delhi have shot up,but leading an agitation in which disconnected meters are connected again is nothing but a publicity stunt (Arvind Kejriwal launches bijli-paani satyagraha,IE,October 6). His emotional protest have ensured that Arvind Kejriwal is always in the limelight. But by restoring severed connections,is he not helping those who use electricity illegally? In my 24 years in Delhi,I remember just one of two instances where meters were incorrectly read. Even then, the situation was dealt with after complaints were made and the meters were checked. The media also portrays Kejriwals actions as heroic. His aim of ensuring cheap electricity for all may be appreciated but his methods are irresponsible. I feel this Delhi government should be complemented for its handling of the power situation in the city. There have been fewer power cuts in the summer during its tenure, especially when compared to previous years. Gimmicks may attract media attention but the cynical habit of viewing all governance with suspicion sets a flawed precedent and encourages people to take the law into their own hands.

Clarion call
THE civil society activist has entered the political space with the formation of a new party under the leadership of Arvind Kejiriwal. India has often witnessed social movements, such as those against the building of dams and land acquisition, because political parties preferred not to get involved in such issues. This new political party has promised to the people that it will put in place a strong Lok Pal within 10 days of being elected. The television media,a court that prevents authoritarian government action and better transparency through RTI could be tools to support the party in its fight against corruption. Kejriwal represents the new middle class in politics. This party may not produce revolutions like the Arab Spring, but it may bring about more pragmatic changes by eradicating corruption. If nothing else,Kejriwals party will be a wake-up call for the existing regional and national parties. Perhaps they will now work for the welfare of the common man and address social issues instead of spending their time in political games.

Winning streak
THE T20 cricket world cup is pure entertainment and the West Indies are the best entertainers. Their enthusiastic attitude is infectious, especially when the likes of Chris Gayle make short work of the bowling. Their win this year was well deserved and is a recognition of their indomitable spirit.
