Poor strategy

* This refers to ‘Lose-lose’ by Shekhar Gupta (IE,July 13). It is unfortunate that even after the nation has lost so many lives and endured monumental tragedies, the BJP has not learnt any lessons about the dangers of communal politics. The Congress,on the other hand, praises the virtues of secularism only when it is politically expedient. It is not truly secular. The upcoming elections should be fought on issues like development, governance and corruption; issues on which the Congress simply cannot win. The people of India will regret it if they give a non-performing,indecisive and corrupt government a third chance. Don’t be fooled by their

lip-service. They will do and say anything to win

an election.

* Justifying the right to food by arguing that better nutrition will lead to an increase in productivity is poor reasoning (‘The costs of no food security’ by Ashutosh Varshney,IE,July 12). When you are guaranteed food for a fraction of its market price you may be more productive when

you work,but you may

also work less on the whole. I agree that

welfare programmes are a necessity in any civilised society and everything cannot be left to market forces. But these programmes should be designed in a way to motivate people to uplift themselves, rather than be on permanent life-support. I would be very happy if the government would use the same amount of money for skill development and training instead.

* This refers to ‘No easy fixes’ (IE,July 12). The Allahabad High Court’s judgment, prohibiting caste-based rallies,is an excellent one. It has followed the Supreme Court’s example in attempting to clean up our political system. Political parties have been using caste to woo voters, and in the process, have created dangerous divisions in society. Despite being aware of how unwholesome such politics are, parties continue to polarise society through politics based on caste

and religion.

* Indians are still eagerly and patiently waiting for a Lokpal, women’s reservation in Parliament, autonomy for the CBI etc,and have been doing so for several years now. How can the people still be expected to look towards politics for solutions? The judiciary did not force into Parliament’s or the executive’s territory,it was practically invited in by the utter failures of the legislative and executive arms of government.
