Overnight PM
* Apropos the editorial First past the boast (IE,February 27),after bragging that there would be Presidents rule in Uttar Pradesh,Sriprakash Jaiswal said if Rahul Gandhi so wished,he would be administered the oath of office of prime minister at midnight. How can the Congress make Rahul PM unless Manmohan Singh resigns a meeting of the UPA MPs is called and Rahul is elected unanimously,or by a majority,as the UPAs leader? The Congress must stop treating the democratic process with contempt.

Panic button
* The Congresss penchant for making reckless and irresponsible statements during the UP elections continues and it shows their frustration and panic. Their arrogance in foretelling the likely scenario in case the party falls short of a majority. It clearly shows their contempt for democratic processes.

Pro-rata govt
* The Indian polity is so fractured now that its getting increasingly difficult for a party to form government on its own. When no single party gets a majority, let the government be formed on the basis of proportional representation of parties depending on the number of seats they win. If one of the top parties is unwilling to participate in government,it can drop out and the next largest party should be coopted. There should be no concept of a government falling. A no-confidence motion should be only against a party in government and not against the whole coalition.

Shift goalpost
* Indias hockey team deserves kudos for defeating France in the final qualifier match to secure a berth at the London Olympics (India turn a Nobbs…,IE,February 27). The team played for the nation. Its high time hockey got generous encouragement. Sandeep Singh deserves applause for his five goals, including a hat-trick.

Go for gold
* Thanks to hockey coach Michael Nobbs for instilling the fighting spirit in players and teaching them to play like a team. We hope they continue the good work and get the Olympic gold which has eluded us for many years now.

Fizzling out
* Apropos the editorial Mamata sliding (IE,February 27),the Left must be laughing as Mamata Banerjee goes down in public estimation sooner than expected. Banerjee is raising controversial issues like federalism less to discuss them and more to divert attention from her failures. Does her stand not show her recklessness and opportunism, given that her party is part of the UPA? She must attend to peoples problems.
