Not funny
One felt reassured when the new,content-rich NCERT textbooks were made available to children. How relieved parents must have been when civics finally overcame its banality and rooted itself in the discourse of political realities in India. It pains us to see our parliamentarians make yet another mockery of the space they have been elected to. We must raise our voice against this retrograde politics of agitation, that too over issues that are mostly figments of crude imagination.

Infant Didi
YOUR article Mamata at 1 (IE,May 18) is rather indulgent about Mamata Banerjee. She is juggling too many things, either out of design or compulsion. Daunting challenges lie ahead. Her cadre, which had been unleashed on the Left, now needs to be realigned to achieve broader goals. Perhaps we can expect a mellowed Didi and an agenda that includes a degree of national perspective. Early general elections or not, some brainstorming should benefit not only the Trinamool Congress, but also other national parties.

Descent into chaos
THE article Listen to wise counsel (May 17) by Peter Ronald deSouza recounts how members of the Constituent Assembly debated the right to freedom and deemed it the most important article in the draft Constitution. The uproar in Parliament and the subsequent government action to purge the cartoon from the NCERT textbook show how the original spirit of the Constitution has been obscured in 64 years.

THE frenzy in Parliament over a 1949 cartoon in an NCERT textbook only points to the increasing insecurity of the political class today. It does not take an art critic to see that absolutely no insult was intended to B.R. Ambedkar or Jawaharlal Nehru,or the Constitution. Its a shame that MPs,cutting across party lines, chose to rally together not for a national exigency, but to censor a very old cartoon.

THIS refers to Wankhede brawl: Shah Rukh Khan defiant, police slap non-cognisable offence charge (IE,May 17). The ugly fight between Shah Rukh Khan and the security guards at Wankhede Stadium is a disgrace to cricket. The Marine Drive police station, where the complaint was filed by the Mumbai Cricket Association, must investigate impartially.

Food for thought
APROPOS And not a grain to eat (IE,May 17),ideas like NREGA and the food security bill dont mean much when basic necessities like water and electricity are still not available in many places. The severe drought in some parts of Maharashtra is an example. Shouldnt the government spend more on water supply, rainwater harvesting and irrigation?
