• It is unfortunate that preference is given to vote-bank politics and not to principles. The tragedy is that honest and capable politicians — who prefer logic and principle — are thrown out. Look at the examples of regularisation of unauthorised colonies and requesting Naxalites and secessionists for talks. If there is no common voice against such appeasements, the country may soon disintegrate.

Self-sufficiency first

• If Andhra Pradesh is divided into two separate entities, there may well be calls for divisions in other states — such as Vidarbha or Gorkhaland. Future divisions of states will not be economically viable; besides,in any crisis, the “small” states will run to the Centre. The first criterion for statehood should be self-sufficiency and not just some vested interests.

Little help

• The bifurcation of a state,as the past bears witness, has been of no benefit — whether Jharkhand,Chhattisgarh or Uttarakhand. Division proved to be of little help to locals. Problems like Naxalism, poverty and stunted growth persisted. Thus, splitting states is not feasible. Telangana itself is not a problem; it is extremism and backwardness that must be targeted. Political parties must understand that by branching off there will be not much gain unless the root is treated correctly. The Centre’s bowing to the Telangana demand will only generate chaos in many states.

Pak’s own irony

• Pakistani society today is caught up in its own ironies. They hate the Americans even as they continue to live off US aid, just as they “fear” Indian hegemony while helping insurgents against us.

The contention that the Pakistani army is hesitant to wage war on its own territory is just a ruse to deflect attention from the fact that the Pakistani establishment just doesn’t want to take on hardcore militant. After all, haven’t past rebellions in erstwhile East Pakistan,Balochistan and the NWFP been brutally dealt with?

The author’s argument that India’s security concerns can only be met by Pakistan should also be taken with a pinch of salt as hardly any action has been taken against the perpetrators of 26/11 despite rounds of dossier exchanges. It is thus difficult to sympathise with Pakistan.

New dawn?

• This refers to ‘Hamara Bajaj rides into its sunset’. Rajiv Bajaj should be praised for displaying the courage to change the success formula that was Bajaj Auto, and the confidence to step away from his father’s shadow.
