Move,Minister

Shekhar Gupta’s article on “bureaucrats moving in for the kill” was fantastic (‘The Officer Raj’,IE,October 15). Reading it,I was reminded of a passage in the delightful television series Yes Minister, which,if it had been recorded in a more serious programme, would have raised alarm bells: “When civil servants will remove politicians on ground of incompetence it would empty the House of Commons and remove the Cabinet — and that would be the end of democracy — but it would be the beginning of responsible government.” Yes Minister has now become a stark reality in 21st century India.

Bypoll surgery

THIS refers to ‘UPA draws a bypoll blank’ (IE,October 18 ). While the defeat of the Congress in Hisar was a foregone conclusion, losses in Andhra Pradesh,Maharashtra (of its ally, the NCP) and Bihar signalled the party’s continuing slide. The Congress leadership shouldn’t forget that the Anna effect was responsible for the party’s defeat, particularly in Hisar. This verdict of the people is a warning for the Congress to pass a strict Lokpal bill in the winter session. There are more assembly elections round the corner.

For the people

THIS refers to the editorial ‘Autumn in the West’ (IE,October 19). The way ordinary citizens are rising in protest against governments around the globe indicates the time has come for a fundamental shift in the concept of governance. Governance in modern times has become more focused on power politics than public welfare. The discontent, therefore, isn’t surprising. Well-meaning leaders all over the world need to come together and work out a blueprint for democratic governance that is truly of the people,by the people and for the people.

Call back

THE Chief Election Commissioner’s view that both the right to reject and the right to recall an elected representative will destabilise the country is ill-founded. When the system works well in some other countries, how it will not work in the world’s largest democracy is a wonder. People are fed up with corrupt administrators. If people get both these rights, their elected representatives will be more accountable.

Towering threat

THIS refers to ‘Protect wildlife from cellphone towers: Panel’ (IE,October 14). Perhaps for the first time,a government panel has pointed out the hazards of electromagnetic radiation from cellphone towers and recognised it as a threat to wildlife. The panel should also draw the government’s attention to the hazardous effects of these towers on human beings.
