Midnight madness

* This refers to ‘Lethal force’ (IE July 30). The Delhi Police firing in an attempt to control a stunt motorbike gathering in central Delhi resulted in the death of a 19-year-old. This was entirely avoidable and unfortunate. Consider the options that were available to the police: calling for back-up police personnel, vehicles and crowd control tools; sealing the entire zone and waiting for the situation to cool down; controlling the miscreants through use of tear gas, water canons or rubber pellets. For the police to resort to firing,in a situation involving fast moving and unpredictable motorcyclists, was stupid. There was too much scope for fatal error. Perhaps we should consider equipping our police forces with tasers or stun guns.

* BEING in possession of a lethal weapon comes with the responsibility to use it wisely. It is true that the bikers were unruly and may have been pelting stones at the police. They were responsible for a breach of peace and were being nuisances. But they were also unarmed. The use of lethal force, even if not directed against a person, was simply not justified. This goes to show that police forces across our country have a long way to go in devising appropriate responses and procedures to deal with such incidents.

Track records

* AFTER the injured train driver, who caused the horrific train crash in Spain last week, was discharged from the hospital, the police took him into custody and plan to prosecute him for 79 counts of homicide (‘Spain train driver charged with 79 counts of reckless homicide’,IE,July 29). Had a similar accident taken place in India,I imagine railway union members would have shielded the driver from the police and from public scrutiny. They would have most likely said that the tracks were defective and the rakes poorly maintained, which is why the accident happened. There are fairly high chances that our administration would not have been able to prove the driver’s culpability (on the grounds that he was overspeeding) because our CCTV cameras would most likely have malfunctioned

Welcoming Telangana

* WE HAVE fewer states and high population, compared to the US. This means that the administrative burden,as measured by the number of inhabitants of a state,is greater on our state governments than American state administrations. Lessening the administrative burden on state governments will help them function more efficiently. This is why we should have smaller states, and why Telangana’s formation is a positive step.
