High standards
In his article,A question of standards, not principle (IE,April 4),Vinay Sitapati makes a reasoned argument. As he rightly observes,Novartis, which paid its outgoing CEO $78 million, can hardly be cast as the poor victim. The Supreme Courts judgment, which makes a distinction between real innovation and marketing gimmickry, should be an eye opener for all big pharma companies. But Novartis has been petulant, claiming the judgment would damage innovation.Sitapati has explained how the judgment protects the interests of the innovators by upholding the product patent regime that is the cornerstone of intellectual property rights.

Party in peril
EVER since the telecom scam, ties between the Congress and the DMK had been strained. They snapped recently, with the DMK withdrawing support to the government. The DMK had probably joined the UPA in order to have an advantage over the AIADMK,its rival in Tamil Nadu. That did not work out,as the DMK lost badly in the assembly polls of 2011. The erstwhile UPA partner also seems to have felt that it had unfairly taken the rap for the telecom scam. But it may be paying the price for turning against the Congress, which is believed to be using the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate against the DMK. Once the ED files its chargesheet against A. Raja and Kanimozhi, the two could face a second spell in jail.

Death of a student
WITH the death of student activist Sudipta Gupta, allegedly from a police beating, police excesses have reached a new low (SFI student leader Sudipto Gupta beaten to death, shows post mortem report,IE,April 4). This comes close on the heels of other incidents of police violence in Punjab and Bihar. Scuttling the voices of healthy dissent by the use of force does not augur well for a democratic set-up. In fact,we must acknowledge that peaceful protests are an essential part of a vibrant, functional democracy. In the case in question,a judicial probe should be initiated to uncover the truth and student union elections must be held in the state.

Speaking aloud
IN HIS address to India Inc.,Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi showed that leaders are made, not born. He called for inclusive growth and warned of the dangers of centralising power.Good leaders have a vision, articulate it,then own it and push for its realisation. Rahul Gandhi must make his vision reality. To achieve that,he has battles to fight within his own party and as well as with opposition. Here is a leader in the making, one who speaks of empowerment for all the citizens instead of trumpeting the Congresss or the UPAs achievements. The debate now should be about how workable his ideas are.
