* After seeing how the Centre uses the CBI,Kapil Sibal suggesting that the government play a role in appointing judges (‘Govt must have say in appointment of judges to higher courts: Kapil Sibal’,IE,June 3) is disturbing. Many citizens expect all out political support for such a move and are apprehensive.

* ONE tends to agree with Kapil Sibal. Our judiciary needs reforms, and should work in a transparent manner. Our neighbour,Nepal, does this through a judicial commission, which is responsible for the appointment, transfer and dismissal of judges. We certainly need a Lokpal that is applicable to the judiciary.

* THIS refers to ‘Infosys, the sequel’ (IE,June 3). In a highly competitive IT industry whose fortunes are increasingly dictated by the health of the global economy, slips in performance need to be taken in one’s stride. That said,Infosys is seen to have a divide in the company’s higher management. Its human resources department has evidently been unable to handle sustained and elevated levels of staff attrition. Its top job would require a young and energetic pursuer of dreams, rather than a doyen of a certain vintage.

* APROPOS ‘Singh and friends’ by C. Raja Mohan (IE,June 3),the writer’s advice to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to start India’s relations afresh with the new Nawaz Sharif regime in Pakistan and to consolidate bilateral relations with Bangladesh is sound and timely. The prime minister did well to pursue a strategic partnership with Japan and ignore Bejing’s warnings. Having developed strategic relations with Pakistan and given short shrift to India’s concerns,China has no right to criticise India for having such a relationship with Japan or with any other country in the region.

* THIS refers to ‘Why cricket should apply to the Olympics’ by Mini Kapoor (IE,June 3). In 1998,when cricket had been included in the Commonwealth Games,India was about to play an ODI series against Pakistan in Canada. At that time, most players were more interested in playing in Canada, for monetary benefits rather than pride in winning a Commonwealth Games medal for India. It is unlikely that Indian players would show enthusiasm for the Olympics as cricket in our country is solely driven by money. No wonder match-fixing episodes have been so frequent over the past few years.
