Opinion Forty Years Ago: Protestors Arrested

A K Sen, counsel for Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, argued before the Supreme Court that Parliament, through the 39th Amendment, had only changed election law and the forum to decide election petitions. The government was not reviewing the Allahabad High Court ruling on the the prime minister’s election case when it pushed the amendment, Sen said. It was Parliament that gave high courts the right to adjudicate on election petitions. Hence, Parliament could also take away the jurisdiction of the courts and vest it with some other forum, he argued. The forum that was to adjudicate on the elections of the prime minister and speaker of the Lok Sabha was yet to be set up, Sen told the court.

TN CM Meets PM

The Tamil Nadu chief minister arrived in Delhi for a meeting with PM Indira Gandhi and left the same evening. He told the media that they discussed the political situation in the country, including the Emergency, and state matters. Socialist leader N G Goray called on M. Karunanidhi at Tamil Nadu house after the DMK chief’s meeting with the PM.

Cloud Burst Kills 30

Thirty persons were feared killed in a flash flood that swept Bulandshahr town in UP, when the Kali Nadi burst its banks after a cloud burst, a report said. The town came under four to 10 feet of water and many people took shelter on roofs and trees. The Ganga canal, which carried the flood waters to the town, was closed at the head works. Army boats were rushed in from Roorkee and Dehra Dun for relief work.
