A temple as Diwali gift

While it may suit the BJP to keep the Allahabad high court’s verdict on Babri Masjid in the background till the Bihar assembly elections conclude later this month, the Sangh Parivar doesn’t agree. The RSS’ Organiser dwells at length on the verdict and the Ram temple in its “Deepavali Special” edition,to which the “contributors have all in some way or other been part of that campaign.” In fact, while the mainstream political spectrum is appealing for restraint,Organiser’s lead editorial suggests that “a grand Sri Ram Temple at the Ramjanmabhoomi will mark the onset of the new India,a historic continuum of a glorious civilisation.” It argues the court’s rejection of the UP Sunni Wakf Board’s petition has “cleared the path for the total control of the land by the Hindus,” although the verdict called for trifurcation of the land. The editorial admits that they resorted to “taking [the law in their hands… to restore the holy city and rebuild the Sri Ram temple” at the Babri site. “This verdict at last brings us closer to a final settlement. In that hope we celebrate this Deepavali,” the editorial concludes.

Meanwhile,Organiser has got Arif Mohammed Khan to appeal to Muslims to accept the verdict for the sake of co-existence. “The Lucknow verdict may not be a masterpiece of judicial craftsmanship, but it surely deserves to be hailed as a ‘courageous judicial initiative’,” writes Khan, adding that,“for many decades the politics of Ayodhya has kept us divided. The judicial verdict on Ayodhya has shown us the light at the end of the tunnel. Now it is for us to grab this opportunity to use Ayodhya to unite us by building new bonds of national harmony and fraternity.”

Kashi and Mathura next

Organiser’s contributors go further, mounting a war cry for grand temples at Kashi and Mathura post-verdict and demanding the Centre pave the way through legislation. “Whether it pleases or hurts anybody,it is an inalienable truth once the construction of the temple begins in Ayodhya,we shall engage ourselves in the godly mission of freeing the entire country — right from Kashi,Mathura and from the Hindu Kush mountains to Manipur-Tripura,the entire Ramjanmabhoomi, the entire Mother India from the clutches of every shade of traitor,” Acharya Dharmendra Maharaj writes. “The temple-favouring verdict… will never be acceptable to the Jilanis,Ansaris,Bukharis,Shahabuddins, who along with Babur’s descendants will sooner or later reveal their true colours,” he adds

Former law minister Subramanian Swamy backs up this analysis, saying that “the Ram Temple on Ramjanmabhoomi has a superior claim to the site than any mosque” and asserting that “this is the fundamental truth in the Ayodhya dispute. This truth will apply to the Kashi Vishwanath and the Brindavan temple sites as well.” On the possibility of a legislation for the temple,Swamy suggests that “if such an amendment is not brought forth,Hindus should wage a fierce democratic struggle for the next three-and-a-half years to force the government to do so — or weld a solid Hindu vote so that in the next general elections a Hindu Front supported by the Hindu dharmacharyas, the VHP and the RSS can obtain an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha.”

Terror? Who,us?

As the Congress attacks the RSS for its alleged terror links,Organiser has published a statement from the RSS sarkaryavah,Bhaiyaji Joshi, describing the investigations into the Ajmer blasts as a “politically-motivated conspiracy against the RSS.” Joshi says that “there are clear signs of a sinister design to defame the RSS.” Joshi adds that “while we are a Constitution-abiding organisation with full faith in the process of law we can’t be cowed down by unscrupulous and sinister political conspiracies.” He adds that the RSS will “counter” these allegations “on all the available fora including

the courts.”
