On Akali Agitation
The Punjab Chief Minister, Darbara Singh, met the Governor, A P Sharma, his third such meeting to exchange notes on the political situation in the context of Akali agitation and the law and order situation highlighted by the assassination of DIG A S Atwal outside the Golden Temple. On reports of dropping of ministers siding with the state Congress (I) Legislature Party dissidents, observers are of the view that such a step was unlikely.

Sri Lankan President J R Jayewardene told the visiting Indian Minister for External Affairs, P V Narasimha Rao, that he had decided to solve the residual problem of statelessness of persons of Indian origin in Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has warned that the situation in the South Asian region would be “greatly complicated” if Pakistan provided base facilities to the US rapid deployment force. “Pakistan’s providing base facilities to US rapid deployment force would certainly go against the spirit of the (nonaligned) declaration on the Indian Ocean as a zone of peace. It would also greatly complicate the situation in our part of the world”, said PM Gandhi.
