Two separate rape cases reported from Sohana and Balongi police station areas have once again raised serious concerns over law and order and women’s safety in Mohali district. Police have registered cases in both incidents and initiated investigations.

In the first case, the Sohana police has booked Sunil Kumar, a resident of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, on charges of rape, criminal intimidation and under provisions of the SC/ST Act. The complaint was filed by a 25-year-old woman, who alleged that the accused first befriended her and later established physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage.

According to the victim, the accused sexually assaulted her within the jurisdiction of Sohana police station and also used caste-based derogatory remarks during the incident. She alleged that he threatened to kill her if she spoke about the matter. Acting on her complaint, the police registered a case under sections 69, 74 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with relevant sections of the SC/ST Act. The accused is currently absconding, and police teams have launched raids at his possible hideouts to arrest him.

The second case has been reported from the Balongi police station area, where a 14-year-old minor girl was allegedly raped. The accused has not yet been identified. The case was registered on the statement of Sub-Inspector Gurdeep Kaur against an unknown youth.

Police said the accused allegedly intimidated the minor before committing the crime. A case has been registered under the POCSO Act along with other relevant sections. Officials stated that both cases are being investigated.
